Does DLSS 5 support RTX 40 Series?

Officially, no. Experimentally, a community-patched runtime claims RTX 40 support by backporting Blackwell-only functions. Those are different claims.

Short answer: NVIDIA’s current compatibility table places DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering on RTX 50 Series only. RTX 40 demonstrations use unofficial community components.

Official support

The NVIDIA DLSS hardware table shows 3D-Guided Neural Rendering and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50, while RTX 40 retains support for Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, Super Resolution, and DLAA.

What the community patch claims to change

In the RenoDX Discord thread, ShortFuse describes a patched nvngx_dlssnr.dll that branches automatically by hardware. The author says the RTX 40 path backports functions otherwise limited to Blackwell/RTX 50, while RTX 20/30 replace FP8 calls with a nearly full FP16 pipeline. RTX 50 is described as untouched.

This is an author claim about a closed-source modified binary, not an independently reproducible source-code change. The site has not reverse engineered or validated the patch. A successful launch also does not make RTX 40 an officially supported DLSS 5 platform.

What an RTX 40 installation changes

The current community instructions install the ReShade Full Add-on build, place the ShortFuse renodx-dlss.addon64 beside ReShade.ini, deploy the required DLSS/Streamline files, and then overwrite nvngx_dlssnr.dll with the patched RTX 20/30/40 version. No local mirror: the patched file is an NVIDIA proprietary runtime modified by a third party. DLSS5Mod documents where it fits but does not redistribute it.

What to expect

  • A moderate or substantial frame-time cost, depending on resolution and route.
  • No NVIDIA support for crashes, artifacts, or image-quality changes.
  • Possible altered skin, lighting, tone mapping, UI, and temporal stability.
  • Game-specific behavior; a runtime working in one title says little about another.
  • Potential signature and antivirus warnings for modified or unsigned files.

Who should try it?

Only users comfortable restoring game files and reading logs, in offline single-player games. For everyone else, wait for an official integration or use the game’s supported DLSS 4.5 features.
